Fixed gear 10-mile TT

Please sign on at Queen’s Field, Sutton Lane, Sutton Benger. To get there from Chippenham, take the B4069 Lyneham Road then after Sutton Benger Church turn right into Sutton Lane. Queen’s Field is approx 300 yards on left, just after the de-restriction sign and marked “Queens Field” by a car number plate.

For those unfamiliar with this event wishing to qualify for the trophy you must ride in a gear restricted to 72 inches. This means that for one revolution of the pedals you can only cover a distance of 18 feet 10.3 inches or 5.75 metres. If you are going to use a multi geared cycle the derailleur will need to be ‘screwed down’ or ‘tie wrapped’ to restrict changing gear. Typical ratios that are OK are 48 x 18, 45 x 17, 42 x 16 and 52 x 20. A quick method of establishing the distance is –

• Mark out the distance (18’ 10.3” or 5.75 meters)
• Engage selected gear ratio; line up 1 pedal with start of measuring distance, reverse wheel your cycle until 1 revolution of the pedal crank is achieved.
• If one revolution is achieved before reaching the end of measured distance then the selected ratio is OK. If not try another ratio. If one revolution is achieved with a considerable distance to go try a higher ratio.

For those who do not wish to qualify for the Trophy event, but still wish to have a go at the Time Trial, feel free to come along and ride an “unrestricted” 10 Mile Time Trial on any bicycle.
