We’ve designed a new route for the MTB and gravel bike riders amongst you. Gravel tyres minimum 40mm wide are recommended for this route. The route heads out on the cyclepath to Cherhill where we climb up to the Lansdowne monument to reach an alternative route into Avebury and our morning coffee stop at the Circles Cafe. After the cafe we retrace to Beckhampton and climb up to Tan Hill where we pick up the Wansdyke and its amazing views to the north and south from the highest hill in the county. We’ll follow the Wansdyke until it meets the Ridgeway which we then descend (with care) to East Kennett before continuing onwards to Overton and Fyfield Downs. For a change we’re going to try the descent to Rockley and then follow the quiet lanes and trails up to the top of Hackpen Hill. The route descends Hackpen on the road and then picks up the fast running gravel trail from Broad Hinton to Yatesbury after which we return on the cycle path via Calne. This is quite a hilly route with some technical gravelly descents which need to be taken with care. It’s recommended to bring plenty to drink and some energy food as there is nowhere to re-fuel after the Circles Cafe. Note the start location will be at the northern end of Cocklebury Lane (near the top of Pew Hill). Please note that attendance of this ride requires advanced booking. Please use this simple booking form. The form is a mandatory for all riders, so the organiser knows who and how many to expect and so we have a record of everyone riding on the day. Your cooperation to complete this in advance of the ride will be much appreciated. Any issues with the above process can be directed to leisureride@chippenhamwheelers.org.
