Welcome to Racing
Chippenham and District Wheelers provide a number of opportunities for club members to race in time trials (both Open and Club events) and organise some track racing events such as the Castle Combe Good Friday track racing at Castle Combe. The club has a number of competitions and awards for both time trials and road racing.
All riders are welcome at our events and you do not need a time trial bike to race our time trials.
This page provides links to further details on the club racing activity. Please note you may need to scroll down to see all entries as page formatting is not going as the author hoped!!
Cycling Time Trials
The club is affiliated to the Cycling Time Trial organisation and all events are organised in accordance with their regulations. Please note CTT requires all riders to wear a helmet and have a working front and rear light.
Western District Time Trials
The club is part of the Western District of the CTT and all club events are approved by the District.
Western Time Trial Association
The club is part of the Western Time Trial Association (WTTA) and participates in the Hardrider race series. Hardrider courses are non standard distances on generally hilly courses.
What Are Time Trials
Time trialling is the simplest of competitive formats: a race against the clock, with riders starting a minute apart. It’s known as the ‘race of truth’ because there’s nowhere to hide, no one to draft behind; just you and the bike and the thumping of your heart. Oh, and a clock ticking. The CTT full description is in the article : WHAT IS A TIME TRIAL?
A fuller explanation is in the club briefing on “The Race of Truth – Time Trials: Why Ride Them and How to Enter“.

Club Evening Time Trials
The Club runs Time Trials on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. The diary shows what course is being ridden, the distance, the registration time and the start time. (Diary entries should be opened for full details as the headline detail does not show the changing registration time throughout the season.)
Entry fees for Club Evening Time Trials are:
Note a CTT £3 levy is paid for all riders entering an event. The onus is on riders to declare their correct status / affiliation on entering the event as the officials do not necessarily know all entrants or have knowledge of changes in status.
Open Time Trials
Guidance on entering Open Events can be found on the CTT Website at:
Most events now accept Internet Entries. Note that entries typically close at mid-night on the published closing date which is usually the Tuesday a fortnight before the event. Details are in the CTT Handbook and on the CTT Website.
Closed Circuit Road Racing
Members may wish to note that there are a series of closed circuit races which are held on Thursday nights at Castle Combe Race Circuit during the summer. These are not Chippenham and District Wheelers events. Details can be found on the British Cycling website at:
navigate to the Events tab and search for Castle Combe and South using the filters.
Any news stories on racing for publication on the web site are welcome, please send these to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Calendar of Events
A consolidated list of the Club Time Trial Programme is in the Club Handbook and all events will be loaded into the Club Calendar. A separate listing of the events can also be found at the Time Trial page for the year (with each event start time) . The 2022 Events are also here
Please note that for most time trials registration closes 15 minutes before the start time for the event. Event start times do vary during the year, so it is worth checking the diary.
As you may be aware time trials use an arcane naming system for race courses. However, all Club courses and Open Courses used by the club can be seen here with links to course maps.
Details of club time trial competitions can be found at https://www.chippenhamwheelers.org/club-time-trial-competitions/.
Details of club road racing competitions can be found at https://www.chippenhamwheelers.org/racing/road-racing/.
The club has trophies and awards to support the club competition. These can be seen here.
(This is updated at the end of each season but maintained during the year by the racing secretary. Riders must inform the racing secretary of their results for the record to be updated.)
Club Annual Time Trial Pages
The club racing secretary produces an annual page for each year’s time trials and these are linked below. Each page also provides a link to a record of annual time trial reports.
Note historic links on these pages may not work due to website update – all material can be found from the updated Racing Page or 2017 pages onwards
