WELCOME TO RACING

Chippenham and District Wheelers provide a number of opportunities for club members to race in time trials (both Open and Club events) and organise some track racing events such as the Castle Combe Good Friday track racing at Castle Combe.  The club has a number of competitions and awards for both time trials and road racing.

All riders are welcome at our events and you do not need a time trial bike to race our time trials.

This page provides links to further details on the club racing activity.  Please note you may need to scroll down to see all entries as page formatting is not going as the author hoped!!

What Are Time Trials

Time trialling is the simplest of competitive formats: a race against the clock, with riders starting a minute apart. It’s known as the ‘race of truth’ because there’s nowhere to hide, no one to draft behind; just you and the bike and the thumping of your heart. Oh, and a clock ticking.

The CTT full description is in the article :  WHAT IS A TIME TRIAL?

A fuller explanation is in the club briefing on “The Race of Truth – Time Trials: Why Ride Them and How to Enter“.

An FAQ on everything you never knew you didn’t know about time trials has been put together for the West District page and is well worth a read (even for experienced time trialists).  FAQs

 Club Evening Time Trials

The Club runs Time Trials on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. The diary shows what course is being ridden, the distance, the registration time and the start time. (Diary entries should be opened for full details as the headline detail does not show the changing registration time throughout the season.)

Entry fees for Club Evening Time Trials are:

  • Adult Members and Adult Second Claim Members – £4
  • Adult Non Members – £5
  • Youth/Juvenile Members – No fee
  • Youth / Juvenile Second Claim and Non Members – £3 (to cover CTT levy)

Note a CTT £3 levy is paid for all riders entering an event to the CTT.  This levy provides insurance for riders, organisers and the club in the event of an incident. The onus is on riders to declare their correct status / affiliation on entering the event as the officials do not necessarily know all entrants or have knowledge of changes in status.

Open Time Trials

Guidance on entering Open Events can be found on the CTT Website at:
https://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/articles/view/9

Guidance on arranging Open Events can be found on the Western District Website at: https://west.ctt.org.uk/
on the “Info” tab, or at the CTT Website at:  http://organisers.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/

Most events now accept Internet Entries. Note that entries typically close at mid-night on the published closing date which is usually the Tuesday a fortnight before the event. Details are in the CTT Handbook and on the CTT Website.

Closed Circuit Road Racing

Members may wish to note that there are a series of closed circuit races which are held on Thursday nights at Castle Combe Race Circuit during the summer. These are not Chippenham and District Wheelers events. Details can be found on the British Cycling website at:
http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/

navigate to the Events tab and search for Castle Combe and South using the filters.

Any news stories on racing for publication on the web site are welcome, please send these to committee@chippenhamwheelers.org.

Calendar of Events

A consolidated list of the Club Time Trial Programme is in the Club Handbook and all events will be loaded into the Club Calendar. A separate listing of the events can also be found at the Time Trial page for the year (with each event start time) .  The 2024 Events are also Club TT programme 2024

The full calendar of club events are also shown in the club calendar, accessible from the home page.

Please note that for most time trials registration closes 15 minutes before the start time for the event.  Event start times do vary during the year, so it is worth checking the diary.
