Chippenham and District Wheelers have a number of local time trial courses to allow them to run their 10 mile, 25 mile and 50 mile championship events, as well as a number of hilly courses. In keeping with Cycling Time Trial (CTT) tradition the courses are all given a course code, but often have a local name as well. The courses are registered with CTT and are all risk assessed.
The club also sponsors and maintains a number of courses on behalf of West District. These courses are held in the CTT database of courses but are listed below for completeness.

UC861 – JACK NUNN 10 MILE TIME TRIAL COURSE
The Jack Nunn 10 Mile Time Trial course is the club’s usual course for its evening 10 mile time trial Jack Nunn series held on Wednesday evenings in the summer. It is a generally quiet road with low traffic counts. It does include one right turn where riders must not cut the corner, but visibility ahead for oncoming vehicles is good. The road surface is often quite broken but there is generally a good line.
Start at Sutton Benger on B4069, opposite junction Sutton Lane. Continue through Christian Malford and on to Swallet Gate (SU990808) where turn left. Continue over bridge crossing M4 to junction to Dauntsey where turn right. Continue through Dauntsey to Little Somerford where turn left towards Great Somerford. Continue through Great Somerford and continue on to finish opposite junction with Upper Seagry Road at SU949801.

UC861 ALT – 10 MILE TIME TRIAL COURSE
UC861 Alt is an alternative course based on UC861 and is called the “Spitfire” course as it starts near the Spitfire memorial. The course avoids Idover Lane and Little Somerford.
Start Opposite 5 Thorns Lane by Spitfire Monument
Go south to Sutton Benger and turn left (care) onto B4069 go East towards through Christian Malford and on to Swallet Gate (SU990808) where turn left. Continue over bridge crossing M4 to junction to Dauntsey where straight on Great Somerford (x-rds with Volunteer Pub/Village Shop) where turn left towards Sutton Benger and continue on to finish 100 yds past layby at bottom of hill.

UC861 SHORT
UC861 Short is an 8 mile time trial course for those nights when the roadworks are just against us and it is all that is available.
Start Sutton Benger
START (G.R. 950787) in High Street, Sutton Benger. Go East on B4069 (direction of Lyneham). Several minor roads from farms join from left. Continue towards turn at Dauntsey Lock (CARE IN CASE OF CAR BOOT SALE HERE) to Lyneham. Turn left into Church Lane and 30 m after crossing M4 Motorway bridge turn right across road into The Green. (CARE IN CASE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC OR TRAFFIC TURNING FROM THE GREEN ROAD. DO NOT CUT THE JUNCTION LINE MARKINGS). Continue North West to Little Somerford along The Street. After top of hill turn left (still on The Street) by bus shelter (CARE AS TRAFFIC FROM RIGHT HAS PRIORITY DUE TO DESIGN OF JUNCTION). As go down hill towards Church be aware of parked cars on right. Continue through Great Somerford and finish 100 yards past the Volunteer Pub / Village Shop cross roads.

UC861Z is a 5 mile time trial course. Designed as a CATI course. Starts in Sutton Benger at start of UC861 and goes along B4069 to Dauntsey. Turn left and follow road towards Great Somerford. Take care at S Bend by Dauntsey Park House. Finish by farm field gates 3-400 yds past Dauntsey Park House Bridge.

UC862 – 25 MILE TIME TRIAL COURSE
UC862 is the club’s 25 mile course used for the Hinder Cup (men) and Gerald Cup (women). It starts before the roundabout in Chippenham near Wavin / Parsonage Way Industrial Estate. It heads north east to Sutton Benger before joining the UC861 course and is the 2 laps of UC861 course.
Start on the B4069 between the junctions of Hill Corner Road and Parsonage Way on B4069 through Kington Langley to Sutton Benger *. Continue to Swallet Gate (SU990808) where turn left. Continue over M4 bridge to junction to Dauntsey where turn right. Continue through Dauntsey to Little Somerford where turn left. Continue through Great Somerford to Sutton Benger. At the junction with the B4069 turn left and complete the circuit from * to finish opposite junction with access road to disused pit (SU945792).

UC863 is a 15 mile time trial course, which is currently not in use due to the collapse of Lyneham Banks
UC863S – LYNEHAM BANKS SPORTING TIME TRIAL
UC863S is a sporting time trial course which starts in Sutton Benger and goes out to Lyneham, up Lyneham Banks. It has a challenging climb and a technical descent. With the collapse of Lyneham Banks in February 2022 the course is out of use at present. The course should not be used if very wet as the bends are considered hazardous on the descent.
START (G.R. 950787) in High Street, Sutton Benger. Go North East on B4069 (direction of Lyneham) for approx 5 miles climbing Lyneham Banks to Lyneham RAB and turn at RAB 3rd exit, come back on same course descending Lyneham Banks back to Sutton Benger. Finish opposite the start.

UC864 – 50 MILE TIME TRIAL COURSE
UC864 is the club’s 50 mile course used for the Nixon Cup and the Edwards Handicap Trophy. It starts in Idover Lane which is a 15 minute ride from the signing on location. The course is effectively 4 1/2 laps of the UC861 route. Course is normally used within a couple of weeks of longest day or else riders may be finishing in dark. Note that setting sun may be an issue.
Start at the junction of Idover Lane, Dauntsey and complete four circuits of ‘10’ course. Continue to Finish opposite junction with access road to disused pit (SU945792).

UC865S – MALMESBURY SPORTING TIME TRIAL
UC865S is a sporting course running from M4 Motorway Bridge laybye to Little Somerford, over to Malmesbury hospital RAB and then back to Upper Seagry. It is a 10 mile course with 2 good descents and 2 good climbs.
Start in laybye 200m south west of motorway bridge on Seagry Road (GR 947795). Cross motorway, and pass through Great Somerford to Little Somerford, where left to junction with B4042 (Marshal), where left to Malmesbury Hospital roundabout (Marshal), where left onto A429 for 1km, then turn left (Grange Lane) and through Startley to finish at Upper Seagry adjacent to village hall (now demolished) (GR ST 945810).

UC866 – 10 MILE TIME TRIAL COURSE – AKA “Q” COURSE
UC866 is a club 10 mile time trial course which avoids Seagry Road when there are roadworks. It uses the B4069 from Sutton Benger and a loop Dauntsey – Little Somerford – Great Somerford – Dauntsey. Course includes a right turn after the motorway bridge at Dauntsey.
Starts Sutton Benger, finishes junction Dauntsey Lane/Green Lane.

UC867 – 10 MILE TIME TRIAL COURSE – AKA “P” COURSE
UC867 is a club 10 mile time trial course which avoids the B4069 when there are roadworks. It uses the Seagry Road to Great Somerford and then a loop to Dauntsey – Little Somerford – Great Somerford before continuing to finish just past the start. Course includes a right turn in Great Somerford by the Volunteer Pub and the Village Shop.
Start at junction Upper Seagry Road (SU949801) to Great Somerford. Turn right to Dauntsey. At Dauntsey junction (SU994819) turn left. Continue through Dauntsey to Little Somerford, turn left towards Great Somerford. Continue through Great Somerford and finish 50 metres past junction with Upper Seagry Road.

UC867 SHORT
UC867 Short is a 5 mile time trial course. Potentially it can be used as a CATI course. Starts on road to Dauntsey and finishes on down slope towards Sutton Benger.
To reach start from event HQ in Sutton Lane, turn right on minor road and travel North. Turn right onto main road and follow B4069 to Dauntsey turn.
Start at junction of St James / Church Road to Great Somerford. In Great Somerford at cross road by Volunteer Pub / Village Shop turn left and follow road towards Sutton Benger. Finish by Junction Seagry Road / Seagry Hill.

UC867/25 is a 25 mile time trial course based on UC867 with 3 1/2 laps of the head of the "P". It was first used in 2023 due to roadworks on both UC862 and U86/25.

UC868S – SODOM HILLY
UC868S is a new (2023) club hilly course which is quite technical and has a “punchy” climb up Callow Hill and a fast descent into Little Somerford. Course is 12 miles.
Start in Sodom Lane by farm entrance (///subsystem.cloak.tennis) and follow Sodom Lane to left bend where road becomes Whitehill Lane. Stay on Whitehill Lane till sharp left onto Callow Hill. Climb Callow Hill till junction with Brinkworth Road where turn left (care cars from right). Follow road as it becomes The Common, Box Bush, Barnes Green, etc through Brinkworth until on Swindon Road. At 9.3 miles turn sharp left onto The Hill into Little Somerford (do not take earlier turn into Clay Street). Descend The Hill into Little Somerord and stay on road as it becomes Idover Lane. Finish at Old Sodom Lane in Dauntsey (///earful.finishers.remaking).

UC869 – 10 MILE TIME TRIAL COURSE
UC869 is a 10 mile time trial course which starts in Idover Lane and does 1 1/2 laps of the head of the “P” and “Q” courses. It runs to Little Someford, then turns left in Great Somerford at the cross roads with the Volunteer Pub / Village Shop and then turns left before the motorway bridge in Dauntsey before passing the start and doing another lap to the Dauntsey turn. The course was designed in 2023 when it looked as if roadworks were going to remove all other options.
START on Idover Lane by Idover Garage, Dauntsey Green Jn. Continue northwest along Idover Lane towards Little Somerford. In Little Somerford turn left by bus shelter towards Great Somerford. In Great Somerford turn left into Dauntsey Road. At the Green, Dauntsey turn left to ride to start (6.1 miles) and repeat. On second lap continue to finish 10m before junction of Church Lane and the Green at Dauntsey.

UH80/UCH80 – BOWDEN HILL CLIMB
UH80 is the Open Hill Climb and UHC80 is the club hill climb of Bowden Hill at Lacock. (The difference is down to the levels of assessed risk on a Saturday morning or a Wednesday evening.) The climb passes the iconic church of St Anne’s also known as “The Church in the Clouds”. For the last few years the club as donated all profits from the hill climb to the church rebuilding charity. Parking for the event is the public car park next to the Red Lion pub in Lacock.
Start at entrance to Cottage (First cottage after the Chapel) 50m after bridge *. Proceed along Bewley Crescent and then across Bewley common, climbing Bowden Hill past the Rising Sun Public House * to cross Bowden Hill Common, turning the left hand corner at Bowden Hill House * and finishing at the top of the hill adjacent to the Spye Park * gates.

UHC86 – WICK HILL CLIMB
UHC86 is the club hill climb course at Wick Hill.
Park in Wickbridge Lane. Register at starter’s car in laybye before start. Warm up towards East Tytherton.
START: Bottom of Wick Hill. Go uphill from start to top of Wick Hill. Finish is opposite farm gate at top.
