Audax Series 2026 – Mid-season Update

We’ve now completed 4 of our 7 audaxes in this year’s series, so it’s time to share the provisional results (see below). Here’s how the season has unfolded so far.

The Luckington Lycra Lunacy 50km Audax – Sunday 18th January

A thick fog greeted riders for the season opener, yet the turnout was absolutely amazing, well beyond anything we’d dared hope for. A brilliant sign that the appetite for the 2026 series was well and truly there.  The Old Royal Ship at Luckington did a fantastic job keeping everyone fed and watered. No lunacy to report, just a friendly morning out, with everyone finishing smiling.

Special mention to one brave soul who arrived at the start, realised with horror they’d left their helmet at home, rode back to fetch it, then completed the entire route in reverse, meeting up with the main group at the café. We agreed safety first, and we’re pleased to confirm the miles still count. Just with a better story than most.

The Honey Trap 75km Audax – Sunday 15th February

February did its best to put everyone off, bitterly cold and driving rain, the sort of day where even hardy riders double-check their thermals, yet the turnout in such conditions was genuinely unexpected.

The challenge of the day wasn’t the climbs, it was getting hands back into cold, wet gloves. Plenty of banter and by the end a real sense of having all got through it together.  Honey Street Mill Café did a roaring trade in bacon baps, coffee and cake, and everyone rolled home happy, if a bit colder than planned.

The Nailsworth Hammer 100km Audax – Sunday 22nd March

Hand on heart, the best route of the series so far.  Blue skies, light winds, and spring sunshine set the tone for a ride that had the Cotswolds showing off their very best. Winding lanes, sweeping descents, and then the Hammer itself, the Nailsworth Ladder, reminding everyone exactly why it’s earned its reputation.  The new National Trust café at Tinkley Gate proved a real gem, friendly, efficient, and with plenty of space inside and out for hungry cyclists to refuel. Definitely one for the regular list.  A huge thank you to Sukie, who really did us proud with this route. The feedback afterwards was genuinely lovely, it’s great to know the hard work that goes into planning these rides is appreciated. Days like this are exactly why we do it.

The Kennet Ketchup 125km Audax – Sunday 19th April

28 riders rolled out for the fourth ride of the season, and we’re delighted to report that all 28 completed the route. The Kennet Valley put on a proper show, riverside stretches glinting in the spring sunshine, a handful of punchy climbs to wake the legs up, and the run into Froxfield delivering stunning views in every direction. A few WHC riders on the road gave us some useful targets to chase, always a good way to add a bit of spice to the legs. As Rich Buckley put it afterwards, “that valley alongside the Kennet from Marlborough is lovely, partly because we don’t ride it so often”, a sentiment many of us agreed with.

Mercers Café in Marlborough once again did us proud. Our second stop at Sticks and Stones in Woodborough nearly turned into an Audax survival test, a breakfast classic car meet had beaten us to it and almost wiped out the food supply! Thankfully, they managed to scrape together enough to keep us all going, and both café owners were gratefully thanked before we rolled out.

We also received a lovely note from our club President, Andy Cook, who completed the ride in just under five hours non-stop. For Andy, the route held special meaning, passing many of his Dad’s favourite roads and the homes of former Chippenham Wheeler members who rode regularly with him.

“A truly wonderful ride today,” Andy wrote, “thanks to the Audax team once again.”
