Road Records Association – a little history

Your club supports the work of the Road Records Association (RRA http://www.rra.org.uk/) through the means of a modest annual subscription. It came up for renewal this month and we have forward paid for the next five years. With your committee discussing this via email, Rob Duncumb wrote the following summary of the organisation that was worth sharing with a wider audience.

For those who are not aware of the RRA it is the national (and regional)  body that officiates/governs (other descriptives apply) place to place records (un-paced) on a a variety of upright machines, solo bicycle, tandem bicycle, trike and tandem trike. These range from straight out 25 mile to Lands End to John O Groats and onto 1000 miles if the rider has submitted for the attempt and of course is so inclined!

Local straight out record included Bath – Bournemouth among others. In recent years there has been a decline in attempts on records for many and various reasons. As an example, London Brighton- London has become a difficult proposition due to high levels of traffic and roads that are all but motorway in name.

Within the past few years (2018) Michael Broadwith made a successful attempt on the LEJOG. https://road.cc/content/news/243766-michael-broadwith-smashes-lands-end-john-ogroats-record He was unable to continue on to the scheduled 1000 miles so some records are now out of reach. But I am sure that each generation has said that since the RRA’s inception in 1888. Sadly, this is a dying branch of our sport.
