Off-road ride on a mix of by-ways and bridleways with inter-linking tarmac road sections. Expect gravel, grass and farm tracks and the occasional bit of mud if it’s been particularly wet. Bike type: our local routes are best suited to hardtail MTBs. Front suspension would be nice to have but not essential. Most of the routes are also quite rideable on gravel bikes, but you’ll need to be confident of your skills on any technical sections. Refreshments: we’ll stop at one of the cafes in Avebury. It’s quite a long stretch to get to Avebury so we recommend bringing something to keep you going until we get there. Tyres: we’ve found that gravel tyres with a minimum 1.75″ (45mm) width are best suited to our routes This ride heads out to Forrest Lane for the first off road section through to Chittoe. Then we head towards Heddington before going off road again over Roundway Hill, Kitchen Barrow Hill, Milk Hill and Golden Ball, before turning Northwest to Boreham and West Kennett and then into Avebury. Refreshments at one of the cafés in Avebury before going offroad again over Highway Penning. It is then a 4 mile stretch on road before the next sections of offroad to Bremhill and Stanley and back into Chippenham on the old Chipp/Calne railway track. A call in to the Dumb Post, may be in order after the rigors of the ride. Please note that attendance of this ride requires advanced booking. Please use this simple booking form Please complete the form for each member wishing to attend. The form is a mandatory for all riders, so the organiser knows who and how many to expect and so we have a record of everyone riding on the day. Your cooperation to complete this in advance of the ride will be much appreciated. It also means we can email you if there is any change in the ride information or cancellation. There is no need to notify us if you subsequently change your mind and decide not to ride, but a short email to the address below will ensure your name is taken off the list. Experienced riders are asked to help keep the groups to a manageable size on the road. Any issues with the above process can be directed to leisureride@chippenhamwheelers.org.
