Paris Brest Paris – 6 ready for the 1200!

Paris Brest Paris – 6 ready for the 1200!

7 Nov 2015 By Leave a Comment

Next month, we have an amazing six Wheelers taking part in the Paris Brest Paris (PBP) 1200 kilometre randonee.

The riders together with their tracking numbers for members and friends to track our progress, are:-

Kate Churchill LO82
Jason webb HO49
Sheni Jiwa H184
Brian Atkins H101
Dylan Spencer Y151
James Bradbury M186

See the Paris Brest Paris website for details on how track each rider.

For Jason Webb its been a four wait since he went as support for Andy Vidler and Simon Matthews in 2011. Jason couldnt ride due to a back problem, but actually being there showed him what to except in 2015. So now his time has come and five other wheelers members will be there too.

To qualify for PBP you have to ride 200,300, 400 and 600 kilometre events in the same calendar year as the event. There is emphasis on self-sufficiency. Riders buy supplies anywhere along the course and support by vehicles is prohibited except at checkpoints. There is a 90-hour limit and the clock runs continuously. Many riders sleep as little as possible, sometimes catching a few minutes beside the road before continuing.

First run in 1891, PBP is a gruelling test of human endurance and cycling ability. Organised every four years by the host Audax Club Parisien, the Paris-Brest-Paris Randonneurs is the oldest bicycling event still run on a regular basis on the open road. Beginning on the southern side of the French capital, it travels west 600 kilometres to the port city of Brest on the Atlantic Ocean and returns along the same route. Todays randonneur cyclists, while no longer riding the primitive machines used a hundred years ago over dirt roads or cobblestones, still have to face up to rough weather, endless hills, and pedalling around the clock. A 90-hour time limit ensures that only the hardiest earn the prestigious PBP finishers medal and have their name entered into the events Great Book along with every other finisher going back to the very first PBP.

No longer a contest for professional racing cyclists (whose entry is now forbidden), PBP evolved into a timed Randonnee or brevet for hard-riding amateurs during the middle part of the 20th century. The event is held in August every four years.

Many congratulations to Kate, Jason, Dylan, Brian, Sheni and James on just qualifying for PBP and good luck for next month!
